Biography
Officer Rodney Taylor Butts died on October 15, 1975, after suffering a fatal heart attack during a violent physical struggle with a felony suspect. Even off the clock in spirit, Officer Butts gave everything in the line of duty, and the physical toll of that confrontation claimed his life.
He is remembered by the Sacramento Police Department and the community he served as an officer who embodied the commitment to public safety that defines law enforcement at its best. Officer Butts is honored at the Sacramento Police & Sheriff Memorial and the California Peace Officers Memorial Foundation monument.
